The story
Built in 1863, the City of New York was a wooden propeller steamer that worked Lake Ontario for nearly six decades, one of the longest careers of any vessel in the sanctuary. She was lost in 1921; her crew survived.
The wreck was located by Capt. Tim Caza and documented by sonar and photogrammetry. It was first believed to be another vessel; when NOAA survey work in 2025 identified the schooner T.J. Waffle at a different site, this wreck was re-identified as the City of New York. She rests in about 200 feet of water, within technical diving depths, and is one of the larger steamers documented in the sanctuary.
