Middle Branch

Middle Branch Patapsco River is a bay located just 2.2 miles from Brooklyn Park, in Baltimore (city) County, in the state of Maryland, United States, near Baltimore, MD. The primary coordinates for Middle Branch Patapsco River places it within the MD 21230 ZIP Code delivery area. Middle Branch Patapsco River is located nearby to Cherry Hill, Westport and Ferry Bar. Middle Branch Patapsco River is also close to Hanover Street Bridge, Smith Cove, Swann Park. Other interesting sites to visit are Middle Branch Park, Broening Park, as well as the old rail road bridge, originally known as the Spring Garden Bridge.

Each year, hundreds of tons of rubbish are washed into the Patapsco watershed from stormwater runoff, or dumped into the watershed, creating a nuisance and an eyesore, and endangering birds, fish and other wildlife that ingest or become entangled in the mess. Dan Fesperman describes the area as 'the lost world of the Baltimore waterfront. Part urban, part rural, part industrial, it is a mud-smelling zone of beached garbage and besieged wildlife, a place where the squawk of the heron competes daily with the wail of the freight train. Hidden from most, even as it is crossed hourly by thousands of cars far overhead, it is the city's biggest and greenest "inner harbor." ' (The Secrets Of The Middle Branch, BaltimoreSun.comSept 2000).

Middle Branch Park

Just across the Veteran's Memorial Bridge near the Inner Harbor lies one of Baltimore's most pleasant outdoor parks. Baltimore’s “other waterfront” - Middle Branch Park - on the “middle branch” of the Patapsco River. In 1926, Baltimore City assumed ownership of the waterside property. Originally open water, the property was extended southward into the Patapsco River when the property was filled between 1977 and 1986 under the supervision of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

With a hard-working history, the 150-acre Middle Branch Park was created by Baltimore City in 1977 by consolidating existing shore side parks - at which time the city began restoring environmentally degraded sites. Ten years later, the Baltimore Rowing and Water Resources Center opened, reviving a tradition of rowing competitions.

Middle Branch Park offers a clear view of the Baltimore City skyline, as well as a wildlife observatory area and a boardwalk.
