The story
Built by Cleveland Ship Building Company, the Choctaw was one of only three 'monitor' design vessels ever constructed. She experienced multiple incidents throughout her career including an engine explosion, sinking at Sault Ste. Marie, and groundings.
On July 12, 1915, traveling upbound with coal in dense fog, she was struck by the Canadian freighter Wahcondah off Presque Isle and sank in only seven minutes. Captain Fox and all 21 crew were rescued.
