The story
The Pewabic and her sister ship Meteor were twin screw wooden steamers that regularly traveled between Lakes Superior and Erie. On the calm evening of August 9, 1865, near Thunder Bay Island, the Pewabic's wheelsman inexplicably steered into the path of the approaching Meteor. The collision created a massive gash in the Pewabic's side, and the vessel sank within minutes.
Despite the Meteor's immediate rescue efforts, at least 35 passengers and crew perished in Thunder Bay's worst maritime disaster. The Pewabic is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the wreck serves as a memorial gravesite.
