The story
Built in 1906 by American Ship Building Co. at Lorain, Ohio, the D.R. Hanna is the largest wreck in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary at 532 feet. On May 16, 1919, while transporting 377,000 bushels of wheat from Duluth to Buffalo, she was run into and sunk by the steamer Quincy A. Shaw.
The vessel capsized and now rests upside down on the lake bottom — a massive steel hull representing the peak of Great Lakes bulk freight shipping.
